INSIDE MARTYN'S HOMAGE TO AN ICONIC HOLLYWOOD HAVEN

A master of modern glamour, designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard is globally renowned for creating
sophisticated-yet-seductive spaces that have earned him a host of A-list clients, awards and TV projects, while
endearing him to audiences around the world. For his second collection with The Shade Store, he was inspired
by the legendary allure of Palm Springs, drawing on its casual beauty, mid-century architecture, and wild
desert landscape to develop four new materials imbued with his signature character and style.

CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF PALM SPRINGS

Martyn chose to showcase the collection in the Abernathy house, a tour de force of Midcentury Modern
design in California’s Coachella Valley. Built in 1962 by architect William F. Cody, the home’s spans of glass, geometric
lines and cactus-dotted poolside epitomize Palm Springs style. “This landmark American house, Palm Springs,
and Coachella Valley—they were all major inspirations,” he says, “So it only made sense to shoot here.” Martyn’s
materials sit seamlessly with the home’s eclectic interior. “You see how magically they work together and
harmonize in this space,” he says.

TEXTURAL TWISTS MEET A DESERT PALETTE

Cast in earthy neutrals, the collection reflects the dunes and dusty expanses of Coachella Valley. It’s an unexpected
departure from the bolder shades for which Martyn is known. “This is a new frontier for me,” he admits, “but there’s
such beauty in the absence of strong color. I find it fresh, exciting, and very versatile.” Instead of vivid brights, he
doubled down on texture, playing with weaving and graphic motifs to add dimension that complements any space.

IN CONVERSATION WITH
MARTYN LAWRENCE BULLARD

HOW IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE REFLECTED IN THIS NEW COLLECTION?

I would say through its luxe feel, the integration of new technology meeting old-school quality, and the textural expressions gathered from worldly travel and a life spent loving fabrics and design. Of course, my passion for natural weaves and fabrics is a recurring trend in my collections and adds to the beauty.

YOU'VE SAID THIS COLLECTION IS A NEW DIRECTION FOR YOU—CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THAT?

I have always been attracted to patterns and bold colors, so in a way creating a collection that is mostly neutral in tone is a personal first. But there’s a timeless quality and a strength to this collection that ensures great longevity in the world of design.

HOW DO YOU CHALLENGE YOURSELF AS A DESIGNER?

For me, it is vital to always take risks and live boldly, live with passion and decorate with pure abandon. If we don’t constantly challenge ourselves as designers, how can we grow, can we stay current and how can we lead the way?

HOW DOES THIS COLLECTION WORK WITH YOUR PREVIOUS DESIGNS FOR THE SHADE STORE?

I see them as extensions of each other—a coordinated line that will live together in harmony as well as make a perfect statement individually when needed or boldly when in unison.

WHAT WINDOW TREATMENT TRENDS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

The new styling is so much simpler. It’s more about becoming a beautiful expression of the homeowner rather than taking over the design of the space. My textured linens in this collection, such as Cactus Weave, are perfect for this new easy, breezy look and adding glamour and vibe to any space.

Also, motorization—it’s always such an amazing addition to a home. Today, we motorize all drapery whenever possible. It adds so much ease and luxury to daily life.
