EXPLORE OUR ROMAN SHADES COLLECTION
Our custom Roman Shades collection showcases six elegant styles — Flat Roman Shades, Cascade Roman Shades, Aventura Roman Shades, Relaxed Roman Shades, Tulip Roman Shades and Pleated Roman Shades. Each is crafted to introduce its own custom look to your windows, from elegant to rustic, all while also providing excellent privacy and light control.
THE BEAUTY OF CUSTOM ROMAN SHADES
Roman Shades gracefully fold into themselves as they are raised and unfold in a beautiful cascading motion when they are lowered. All the folds, when raised, create soft pleats for a rich, full look. Thanks to their soft, elegant folds of fabric, Roman Shades give your windows a similar fullness to drapery but are more closely tailored to the dimensions of the window. Plus, the easy functionality of lifting and lowering Roman Shades gives you even greater control of your privacy and light levels. What is the difference between Roman Shades and Roman Blinds?
Roman Shades and Roman Blinds both refer to the same type of window treatment, so there is no difference. Different companies may refer to these shades as either Roman Shades or Roman Blinds respectively. For instance, at The Shade Store, we officially call them Roman Shades, but the term Roman Blinds can be used interchangeably to mean the same thing.
Customizations for Roman Shades
We offer a variety of options for your custom Roman Shades so you can achieve the right look and get the best functionality.
- Control Types: All styles of our Roman Shades, or Roman Blinds, are compatible with continuous loop control. Our more fuctional styles of Roman Shades including Flat Roman Shades and Cascade Roman Shades are also compatible with cordless control for a sleek appearance and easy functionality. For truly efortless functionality for your Roman Shades, we also offer motorization, which is compatible with Flat, Cascade, Aventura, and Pleated Roman Shades.
- Linings: Privacy or Blackout Lining can be added to any style of Roman Shades, sometimes called Roman Blinds, for no extra charge. For Flat, Tulip and Relaxed Roman Shades, you also have the option of choosing Privacy plus Interlining which means there’s an additional cotton flannel interlining between the standard privacy lining and your chosen Roman Shade material. The result is added fullness and body as well as greater insulation. Lining in any form is beneficial to Roman Shades: It offers privacy, protects the material from UV rays, and provides some extra insulation. Aesthetically, it adds more body and fullness to your Roman Shades for a more luxurious look.
- Optional Features:We also offer Upholstered Valances, handmade from the same material as your shade, to give your window treatments a clean, finished appearance.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT ROMAN SHADES
Choosing the right style and fabric for your Roman Shades will depend on multiple factors such as your existing home decor and your light control and privacy needs. If you plan to lift and lower your shades daily, choose Roman Shades, also called Roman Blinds, that are designed for optimal functionality, including Flat, Cascade, Aventura, and Pleated Roman Shades. These types of shades are very easy to operate no matter which control option you choose. If you put aesthetics over functionality, you may be interested in our decorative styles, including Relaxed and Tulip Roman Shades. These Roman Shades, or Roman Blinds, are not ideal for everyday use because any time you lift or lower them, you’ll need to dress their folds to ensure they stay looking their best.
When thinking about your custom Roman Shades aesthetically, it’s important to consider your existing interior design. Do you plan to complement it with matching shades or stylishly contrasting shades?
For instance, if you have a traditional home with a neutral palette, consider a more classic style for your custom Roman Shades, such as Flat, Cascade, or Pleated Roman Shades with a soft Linen or Wool Flannel material. Many of these materials convey understated elegance and complement all types of décor. As for color and pattern, the soft pastels and neutrals of the Holland & Sherry Collection won’t steer you wrong. In general, for a simple, minimalist look, choose from the many grays, beiges, and whites across materials. To add visual interest, go for a patterned material such as Emerson, or add a touch of color with selections from the Andes or Wool Flannel materials.
For modern homes, the clean lines and minimalist looks of Flat, Cascade, and Aventura will work well. When it comes to material, modern homes can go one of two ways: Neutral tones or pops of color and pattern to break up a more monochrome interior design. For neutral tones, you have plenty of options with soft whites, tans and grays across various materials. For Roman Shades, sometimes called Roman Blinds, you have color and pattern options ranging from subtle textures to bold designs. If you prefer a subtle color or pattern start with our linen, silk or cotton materials. If you’re looking for a more eye-catching, geometric design, try Diamond River Tonal or Zapotec from the Sunbrella Collection. Plus, choosing Sunbrella for your Roman Shades means you get a modern material with great functionality — a key characteristic of modern design. Made from an innovative polyester blend that’s easy to clean — even with bleach — Sunbrella offers easy maintenance. What’s more, with Microban technology, this material resists mold and mildew, making it perfect for moist environments such as above the kitchen sink, or in the bathroom.
For a more farmhouse-inspired or southern-style home, try our Relaxed Roman Shades or Tulip Roman Shades. Crafted to be primarily decorative, they make beautiful backdrops for your gathering spaces with their informal, yet charming, designs. When it comes to the material for your custom Roman Shades, also called Roman Blinds, you can think more about aesthetic than function, as these decorative shades are less likely to experience everyday wear and tear. Choose silk for an elevated look with its soft sheen, cotton for a more countryside-inspired look, or opt for linen for its rustic, character-rich texture.

DESIGN TIPS FOR CUSTOM ROMAN SHADES
For more guidance on choosing the right custom Roman Shades for your windows, we’ve put together a few extra tips:Functional vs Decorative
You can divide up our Roman Shades, or Roman Blinds, into two main categories: Functional and Decorative. For optimal functionality, our Flat, Cascade, Aventura and Pleated Roman Shades open and close easily, making them great everyday window treatment solutions for privacy and light control. For decoration and an emphasis on aesthetics over functionality, our Relaxed and Tulip Roman Shades give you a graceful, elegant design, but are not designed to be opened and closed regularly.
Privacy & Blackout
If you are looking to achieve privacy in your home, we recommend adding Privacy Lining to your Roman Shades. Or, Blackout Lining is perfect for bedrooms, media rooms and other spaces where you would like a darkened space. For most fabric Roman Shades, we recommend lining even if Privacy or Blackout isn’t a primary concern for you. Linings come with no extra charge and they help protect your window treatments from UV rays which, over time, can cause fading and deterioration. Unless you choose a fabric that is meant to be sheer, lining is highly recommended.
